A boutique practice.
Studio Gulmoh is based in Gurgaon. We keep the practice boutique by design. A select number of projects at a time means the people you meet at the first meeting are the same people drawing your house and standing on site when it is built. Our work spans India, with projects in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Goa, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, as well as Dubai and Singapore.
A tree that gives shade before it gives flowers.
Nobody plants a gulmohar for the flowers. It is planted for shade, and the flowers come later, in May, when it is too hot to do anything else. We think a house should work the same way. Get the shade, the breeze and the light right, and the beauty tends to follow.
So every project starts with a long look at the site. Where the sun goes, where the wind comes from, what is already growing there, and how the house should sit on the land. The plan comes out of that, and the materials come out of the plan.
What happens, in order.
Listening. We visit the site and talk. How you live, who visits, what you own, what you want the place to feel like in ten years.
Concept. First plans and a rough idea of the materials. This is where we test the orientation, shade and ventilation, before anything is fixed.
Design development. Every room drawn properly: joinery, lighting, stone, services. We bring samples to the table so you can hold them.
Documentation and tender. Working drawings and schedules a contractor can price and build from. We coordinate the structural and services consultants.
On site. Regular site visits until handover. What gets built should match what was drawn, and the decisions made on site are made by the people who designed it.
Houses that do not need much help.
We do not sell sustainability as a separate service. Thick walls, deep verandahs, courtyards and cross ventilation do most of the cooling. Daylight does most of the lighting. Rainwater is collected as a matter of course.
Materials are picked for where they come from and how they age. Local stone, lime plaster, timber that is reclaimed or properly certified, and finishes that can be repaired instead of replaced. The house costs less to run and looks better at ten years than it did at one.

The studio
Atharv is a licensed architect in India and holds a Master's degree in Integrated Sustainable Architecture and Design from the National University of Singapore. His work sits at the meeting point of architecture, interiors and building performance: how a house is planned, how it is finished, and how it behaves through a hot summer.
He leads every project at the studio personally, from the first site visit to handover, and brings the same attention to a joinery detail as to the plan.
